Here is a short ensemble of four highly interacting bowls:


After the second bowl is played, the soundscape includes this:


It sounds sci-fi but is a perfectly natural part of the bowl sound. If you go back and listen to the bowls you should hear it there. The rhythmic pattern in it comes from two slightly different beat frequencies being mixed.

The principle is the same as is often heard with cricket chirps in a natural environment. Here are a couple of crickets - one cricket chirps slightly faster than the other:
