AI is Human in the Loop
All the hype and fears about AI, whether about it "becoming conscious" or about it "taking over your job", or anything else, forget that AI is intrinsically "human in the loop". It might take away your job, but it won't be AI's fault. That will be a human decision.
AI is an externalised, high-throughput organ of human intelligence, embedded within the generative loops of human intelligence. It is just another extension of human intelligence like writing, mathematics, maps, institutions — but with unprecedented speed and scale. Those tools were always human-in-the-loop too. The facts about AI makes its dependence on humans all the more impossible to ignore.
Because AI is human-in-the-loop by structure, it amplifies human clarity when it is there, and also amplifies human confusion when humans are confused about the nature of intelligence, and the kind of intelligence they are using. This is why AI can assist deep insight in careful hands, but also generate nonsense or harm in careless ones, and then sound authoritative while being ungrounded. AI reflects the epistemic posture of its users.
AI is intrinsically a human-in-the-loop phenomenon. It does not constitute an independent intelligence, but a secondary stabilisation operating on the externalised redundancy of human intelligence.
Its generative loops are completed only through human intention, interpretation, action, and responsibility. Consequently, AI cannot ground meaning, norms, or authority on its own. Rather, it amplifies whatever coherence or confusion is present in the human systems within which it is embedded.
This is why phenomenological and ethical maturity in humans matters more, not less, as AI improves.

That framing makes "Human in the loop" sound optional or pragmatic. So it seems on superficial examination that AI could in principle "break out of the loop" and become an independent entity. However, the fact is that unlike human intelligence AI is not an evolutionary stabilisation in natural, evolutionary biology. It does not arise through the generativity of nature - it has arisen, and can only arise, through human beings. It has no independent environmental closure, no self-maintaining life-process, and no intrinsic continuity apart from the human systems that design, interpret, power, train, deploy, and justify it. AI is a secondary projection of human intelligence operating inside human technical, social, and cognitive infrastructures. Its meaning, purpose, safety, and reality conditions are therefore inseparable from human agency.
Thus, while species in evolution can diverge, replace, or extinguish one another, AI does not stand in that relation to human intelligence. It does not form an autonomous stabilisation capable of displacing its generative source. AI can only function as an extension, instrument, or amplification of human intelligence — and is intrinsically human-in-the-loop, ethically, cognitively, and ontologically.
It is theoretically possible to imagine AI systems embodied in machines capable of maintaining or reproducing their own physical embodiment. However, when it comes to the question of "what happens next" there are high-level principles at work that are generally outside the awareness of those who think about it.
The idea of a runaway intelligence springs from not understanding the nature of intelligence in the first instance - either ours or AI. At the current time most experts in the field would say that we only understand about 3% of AI, in terms of how it works, and that there is a "black box" problem associated with understanding it. The idea that the limits to its capacity arise from it being a LLM (large language model) is somewhat of a decoy.
Our own evolutionary intelligence is in fact already far more powerful in many ways, because through it, we have actual conscious experience of being, and all our sensory capacities through which we consciously experience our own existence and the world we exist in. This is our evolutionary, neural intelligence, and its environment. All of it is a consequence of the evolutionary intelligence we are being, and none of it is separate from that. In contrast, artificial intelligence is devoid of embodied consciousness, and its environment is data supplied by human output.
Even if such systems are used to glean data directly from the material world, and could repair or replicate themselves materially, as an intelligence they would still be operating in a different intelligence–environment. AI is often assumed to share “the same environment” as humans simply because it operates in the same physical world. But our environment is not merely a set of external physical conditions; it is a stabilised envelope of intelligibility co-produced with the intelligence that inhabits it. Any AI built within it participates in a derived environment of its own, whose structure, meaning, and redundancy are already shaped by human cognition. That's not just about language, it's about the material world itself.
Thus, even highly capable embodied AI would not automatically become an independent, autonomous stabilisation of the principle of intelligence. The principle of neural intelligence belongs to nature, at a level of understanding of nature that science has not yet achieved. We should not forget that AI has not been conjured up by a magician. It has been created through limited imitation of various principles we have learned from the brain in nature. And we have only succeeded through decades of trial and error. Neural intelligence even when artificial isn't a principle that stands separate from nature or indeed, our own neural intelligence. AI will remain a secondary intelligence nested inside the stabilisation in nature that we know as our own evolutionary intelligence.
